[해리포터 영어 VI-30] "Remain behind"는 "남아있다"는 뜻

해리포터와 혼혈왕자 (Harry Potter and the Half-blood Prince) 의 마지막 챕터 "The White Tomb"에서는 호그와트 학생들이 덤블도어교수의 장례식을 앞두고 집으로 돌아갈지 호그와트에 남아있을지 고민하는 장면이 나온다.

 

많은 학부모들은 호그와트에 와 아이들을 집으로 데려가고 어떤 가족들은 장례식에 참석할 준비를 하기도 한다. 시무스 피니건은 어머니가 집에 데려가려고 했지만 장례식을 위해 학교에 남아있겠다고 대들었다.

그들은 로비에서 소리높여 말다툼을 했고, 말다툼은 시무스가 장례식을 위해 남아있는 것에 어머니도 동의하여 해결됐다.

이번 포스팅이 해리포터와 혼혈왕자 원서에서 나온 영어표현을 알아보는 마지막 포스팅이다.

원서를 읽으며 은근히 재미있는 표현도 많았고 작가의 문체를 더 직접적으로 느낄 수 있어 행복했는데, 다른 사람들도 이 책을 영어로 읽으며 즐거움을 찾았으면 좋겠다는 생각에 시작한 포스팅 시리즈였다.

막상 포스팅을 하다보니 다른 사람들에게 도움이 되기보다는 오히려 내가 생소한 영어표현들을 정리할 수 있게 되어 좋았고, 오랜만에 어떤 중장기 프로젝트를 끝냈다는 성취감도 생겼다.

해리포터 시리즈의 여섯번째 책인 "해리포터와 혼혈왕자"는 달리 말해 "해리포터와 세베루스 스네이프"의 이야기다.

일곱 권 중 반전이 없는 책은 하나도 없었지만 이번 책은 어느 때보다 슬프고 처절한 반전이었다.

혼혈왕자의 책을 가지게되며 누군지도 모르는 혼혈왕자에 애착을 가지게 되는 해리. 혼혈왕자에게 큰 도움을 받기도, 혼혈왕자의 책에 적혀진 주문때문에 큰 위기에 처하기도 하지만 해리는 그에게 자연스레 의지해왔다.

그런데 그가 바로 해리 자신의 부모님의 죽음에 이르게한 밀고범이었다니. 게다가 그가 바로 덤블도어교수를 죽이고 불사조기사단을 배신했다니.

어린 해리는 얼마나 상처받았을까. 얼마나 허탈했을까.

 

The sixth book of the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is, in a nutshell, a story about Harry Potter and Severus Snape. While there's no book without a plot twist in the end out of the seven, the sixth book has the saddest one.

Harry, who happened to have got a potion book which once belonged to so-called Half-blood Prince, grew attachment towards him. Naturally, Harry had been dependent on him as he got small to life-saving helps from him several times, although was also once in danger because of an unknown spell written in his book.

When Harry finds out that he's the one who told Voldemort about the Prophet, which caused the death of his parents eventually, and that he's the one who made Dumbledore dead and betrayed the Order of the Phoenix, poor little Harry must have been hurt deeply.

How hurt Harry would be. How frustrated he would be.
